Xuehai Tan, Ph.D., CEO & President, Chairman of the Board
Dr. Tan obtained his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the Medical College of Ohio in 1990. He then served as a postdoctoral research fellow and later a research assistant professor in the Biochemistry Department of the University of Washington. In 1993, he became a scientist at Baxter Biotech. In 1995, Dr. Tan joined the Johnson and Johnson Pharmaceutical Research Department and served as a senior scientist. Subsequently, he worked at Aurora Biosciences, one of the leading drug screening companies in the world at the time, as a senior scientist and project manager. Dr. Tan has had more than ten years of experience in both academics and the biotechnology industry. He is a leading expert in assay development and high-throughput screening and has made significant accomplishments in drug discovery research.
Peiyuan Lin, Ph.D., Senior Vice President, Discovery Biology
Dr. Lin received her college education in biochemistry from Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou in 1982 and her Ph.D. degree from College of Medicine in University of Cincinnati in 1988. She conducted her postdoctoral research at Hoffmann-La Roche and P&G espectively before joining Burroughs Wellcome. Before joining in HD Biosciences, Dr. Lin was most recently a group manager and senior investigator in Molecular Pharmacology at GSK Research Triangle Park. She had been with GSK (including former Burroughs Wellcome and Glaxo Wellcome) since 1993 and started as a research scientist and rose through the rank with increasing responsibilities by leading through a number of key internal research projects in Allergy/Asthma, Arthritis and other inflammation areas. She had been working in metabolic disease discovery research since 2003. Dr. Lin is the author of 20 original research publications and recipient for numerous research awards in her 15-year tenure with GSK.
Jingcai Chen, Ph.D., Vice President, Assay Development
Dr. Chen received his Ph. D. in Immunology from the ChineseAcademy of Medical Sciences. In 1987, he graduated from WuhanUniversity, and then worked in the National Vaccine & Serum Institute (NVSI), engaging in the research programs in viruses and cytokines. In 2002, he joined the Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development as a research scientist, working in G protein coupled receptor program. More than 10 research papers were published during this period. In 2005, he worked as the Vice President of Suzhou Xinbao Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. and was in charge of research and development as well as quality control. In 2006, Dr. Chen joined in HD Biosciences as the Vice President, in charge of Assay Development. Dr. Chen has more than fifteen years of experience in academic and biotechnology research, and has strong background in drug discovery.
Bao-Hong Zhang, MD, Ph.D., VP & Head of In Vivo Pharmacology and DMPK
Dr. Zhang has been with HD Bioscineces since March 2009. Dr. Zhang has ten years of industry experience in drug discovery and early development. Prior to HD Biosciences, Dr. Zhang was at Metabasis Therapeutics working in multiple therapeutic areas including chronic liver diseases (hepatitis, cirrhosis and cancer) and metabolic diseases (diabetes, dyslipidemia and obesity), from research scientist to scientific investigator with increasing responsibilities in many key preclinical studies required for corporate partnering and IND filings. He has extensive experience in project leadership from target validation, lead generation/optimization to preclinical development. Dr. Zhang graduated from Dalian Medical University in China in 1987 and trained as a Hepatologist before went on to complete Ph.D. in Medicine at the University of Sydney in Australia in 1996. He embarked on postdoctoral training at the Westmead Millennium Institute in Australia (1996-1999), and subsequently worked at the University of Michigan Medical School as a recipient of NHMRC CJ Martin Fellowship (1999-2001). Dr. Zhang has published more than 20 research articles in peer-reviewed journals including JCI, EMBO J, Gastroenterology and JBC.
Maosheng Duan, Ph.D., VP & Head of Chemistry Biology
Dr. Duan earned his B.S. in chemistry from Central China Normal University (CCNU) (Wuhan, China) in 1987 and M.S. in organic chemistry from Nankai University (Tianjin, China) in 1990. He then became a faculty member of CCNU and worked there for five years. In 1995, Dr Duan enrolled in the graduate school of The Ohio State University (OSU) (Columbus, Ohio), After receiving his second M.S. in biochemistry in 1997, Dr. Duan moved to the chemistry department of OSU to pursue his Ph.D. degree under the supervision of Professor Leo Paquette, where he finished the total synthesis of the immunosuppressive agent Sanglifehrin A. In 2001, Dr. Duan joined GlaxoSmithKline and started his professional career in drug discovery. Dr. Duan¡¯s major research interest is to invent small molecules as antiviral agents. During his time in pharmaceutical industry with GSK, Dr. Duan had worked on a variety of important antiviral programs in the fields of HIV and HCV, targeting a number of different types of viral/host targets. As an expert in medicinal chemistry, Dr. Duan had significantly contributed to multiple clinical candidates and authored/co-authored more than 30 peer-reviewed articles and patent publications. Before joining HD Biosciences, Dr. Duan was a Chief Scientist at GlaxoSmithKline.
Baiqiu Wang, MD, Ph.D., Head of Enzyme program
Dr. Wang has over ten years extensive experience in biology research and industry and is currently in charge of Enzyme program in HDB. With rich experience in molecular biology, cell biology, physiology and genetically manipulated animal models, Dr. Wang jointed HDB in 2007 as a principle scientist. Formerly, she started her postdoctoral training at St. Boniface Research Centre in University of Manitoba, Canada, focusing on kinase transcriptional regulation in cardiovascular disease. She then continued her research training at Harvard Medical School, in the area of cardiovascular research. Dr. Wang has published more than 10 research articles during her advanced research training. Dr. Wang graduated from Harbin Medical University (HMU) in China in 1993 and received her Ph. D. in Molecular Biology at HMU in 1999.
